How many times do you hear "just be yourself"! But what does that really mean? And how easy is it to be your true self in a world where you get judged, ridiculed, yelled at, a world with rules, laws and traditions you never agreed to yet if you don't follow, you're the "weird one".
Being yourself basically means to live out your own truth. Don't give into social pressure and popularity in exchange for living your own truth. Don't let others tell you that you're selfish because you're taking care of yourself and not giving in to their demands whenever they want something. Make sure every give and take is fair and you don't build resentment while doing things you simply don't wish to do. You're allowed to say "no" despite what your initial feeling might tell you.
That guilt, that fear, that confusion that comes up whenever you want to say "no" to something...is all from how you were treated in the past - as a child - or even adult, by people with high demands and high expectations and very little regard to how you felt. People that guilt tripped you into doing things you didn't want to do. People that threatened you when you didn't do what "you were supposed to". All the confusion you felt growing up trying to figure out who YOU are, truly, and how to feel loved and accepted for it, instead of having to change to fit someone else's view or belief.
So. Is it easy to "just be yourself"? No. Not at first. Not if you're used to putting your own needs aside in order for others to be happy, at your expense. It will be difficult at first, but I promise you, I PROMISE...if you want to experience REAL happiness, like authentic, raw, happiness that no one can EVER take away, then take a step - today - however small it may be, towards a more authentic you.
And think about it. We were made to be unique individuals, or else, wouldn't we all think, act and look the same? Uniqueness is a positive trait and a wonderful thing! YOU have something to share with the world, that is uniquely yours, and if you haven't figured it out yet, you will as soon as you take a proactive approach to your own life. Take responsibility for what is going on in your life, what you have created so far and what you want to continue creating. Stand up for something good, make a change in your life and positive changes will occur faster than you can imagine. You only need to make the first step.
